Press Release - 8 September 1994
SUPERSCAPE VR PLC SELECTED AS KEY PARTNER IN MICRO FOCUS' EMERGING
TECHNOLOGIES PROGRAM
Virtual reality software developer, Superscape VR plc, has announced the
signing of a major distribution agreement with Micro Focus for the US
marketplace. Under the terms of the agreement, signed on Friday 19 August,
Micro Focus has selected Superscape as one of the leaders in virtual reality
software for its recently announced Emerging Technology Program. The agreement
between Superscape and Micro Focus is one of the first to be announced for the
Emerging Technology Program, the charter for which is 'to identify key new
technology areas, select the best of breed offerings in these areas and work
with customers to explore creative and productive applications of these
products.'
According to Barbara Bouldin, Manager Business Development, Micro Focus: "We
selected Superscape as a key partner in the Emerging Technologies Program
because Superscape had the best VR front-end to promote to our customers. In
Superscape VRT, we see a product that spars your imagination and inspires you
to use the computer in a way that it hasn't been used before. To adapt to new
or changing way of doing things, you need software that motivates you
substantially through the learning curve. Superscape delivers this
motivation."
Superscape launched its flagship product, Superscape VRT in 1991. Since then
the product has been sold to more than twenty countries world-wide and to such
organisations as the RAF, Logica, Westland System Assessment, Colt, Intel
Corporation, Broadsword Television and Tyne and Wear Development Corporation.
Superscape VRT is a complete interactive virtual world creation and editing
system; the Superscape Visualiser is run-time software visualising virtual
worlds. Development kits and network versions are also available. Superscape
VRT was recently voted 1994 VR Software Product of the Year by the independent
US organisation, Mecklermedia.
Key to the success of the product to date has been its ease of use, high
performance on 486 and Pentium PCs, the ability to assign intelligence and
physical attributes to objects created in the virtual world and the
integration of the software editors, allowing rapid design and development
without the need for programming skills.
Ian Andrew, founder and managing director of Superscape is enthusiastic about
the agreement with Micro Focus: "We have just established an office in the USA
and the partnership with Micro Focus will provide us with an excellent
fast-track into their mature and very influential customer base. The deal is
yet another significant confirmation that virtual reality is being adopted as
a mainstream technology by the traditional computing and software industry."
With immediate effect, Micro Focus will be re-selling the entire Superscape
product line in North America.
Micro Focus provides state of the art programming tools and technology for
application developers. The company developed and launched COBOL in 1976 and
is a leading provider of tools for rightsizing, cross-platform development and
deployment, and client/server computing. This year Micro Focus reported a
turnover of $125m. The company is ranked amongst the top fifty software
development organisations world-wide.
Superscape VR plc was founded in 1983, initially developing 3D graphics
software for the entertainment marketplace. In April 1994, the company became
listed on the London Stock Exchange.
